2009 Progress Report
During 2008, in response to villagers requests, we have initiated a new activity - support of three micro hydroelectric projects that provide small amounts of electricity in areas that cannot be linked to any hydro-electric grids constructed by the local government with bilateral aid. The electricity is generated by water sourced at a high elevation and gravity fed through a pipeline into a power generator housed inside a powerhouse on the village level. The entire design originates in Nepal and cost of each installation is relatively modest considering the long term benefits derived from it by the beneficiaries. Two of these projects, one in Ward 9 of Gokule VDC and the other in Ward 6 of Phalametar VDC are already in operation. The third one in Ward 5 of Gokule VDC is nearing completion. The illustrations below provide a graphic view of the installation in Phalametar VDC.

CIDA approved our new three-year project proposal in support of sanitation. We still have a huge backlog of requests for assistance with sanitation, thus our support of this activity shall continue for some time in the future. CIDA has completely reorganized the Voluntary Sector Fund, which now provides a better project matching ratio, which will provide us with more funds in support of other activities such as school construction, support of biogas installation, water systems and micro-hydel projects.
